Last week David had a few days off so we jumped in the car and headed to Winston-Salem. Neither of us had been there and it was on our “North Carolina to-do” list. The wineries we visited were surprisingly impressive, with wide open manicured valleys all around and beautiful views of the blue ridge mountains. Since we were there during the week and off-season, we pretty much had all the wineries all to ourselves. The chilly weather made for some perfect getaway afternoons trying the different flavors of wines and strolling the winery grounds.
We stayed at the Historic Brookstown Inn. They had Christmas trees up throughout the hotel and even offer a complimentary wine and cheese hour in the evenings and milk and cookies late at night. Presh. The hotel adopted a cat a few years ago, Sally, who was abandoned and she was everyone’s favorite. Before we left, we made our way to Old Salem, which was like stepping back in time. We walked down the cobblestone streets, visited the old bakery and viewed the old architecture. Everything was decorated for Christmas and it felt like the perfect Christmas Getaway.
