Packing Tips with Barrington Gifts

Last week was such a whirlwind. I went from a gorgeous mountain retreat in Boone, North Carolina, to a stunning resort in Highlands, North Carolina, and topped it all off with a trip to the beach with my family. I’m so thankful for every trip and thankful that I’m able to travel with my job. That being said I feel like I’ve packed 3429384 times in the past 3 years and wanted to share my packing routine with y’all…

  1. Check the weather. Always the first on the list. And not only check it, but also trust it which can be hard to do. It felt so weird packing for 40 degree temps for David’s senior retreat when every day had been 70 in Chapel Hill but I was so glad I did. So number one, I check, and TRUST the weather forecast.
  2. Put on a playlist and pour some coffee or a glass of wine. It just makes packing and trying on things more fun.
  3. Stay realistic. If I don’t wear it at home, I’m not going to wear it there. Period. It’s easy to grab that piece I’ve been holding on to but never wear thinking “THIS will be the time I wear it.” But it never works out that way. I know I reach for my favorites whether I’m at home, in NYC, in the mountains or at the beach… so I try to pack the things I know I wear and love.
  4. Plan one outfit for each day. This can be extremely challenging but if you have time to accomplish it, it’s the ultimate packing success! Rather than putting together 3 outfits for everyday “so I have choices” – I decide while packing what I’m going to wear each day while on the trip. Odds are, if I followed step number one, I know what the day’s weather will bring and I usually have a good idea about what’s on the itinerary. This frees up a lot of room in the suitcase and ensures I maximize the space. If I am having trouble deciding on a day’s outfit, I act like I’m walking out the door at that moment for that day. Somehow that helps me make a decision!
  5. Pack a portable cell phone charger. I was on my way to the beach when my phone died and I was horrified to remember I had left my car charger in David’s car. My means of direction is the “little blue line” on google maps, so obviously I was up a creek. I had to make a pit stop at Verizon which added 30 minutes to the trip. I am vowing to order an external charger today!
  6. Compartmentalize. Things are much easier to find, my bag stays neater, and it’s more hygienic. I save duster bags when I get a new purse and use the bags to separate my shoes, dirty laundry, etc…
  7. Use cute Luggage. Can we all agree that traveling is more fun when you love your bags? I feel cuter walking through the airport and just more “put together” – which, when traveling can be a huge accomplishment. I LOVE Barrington Gifts canvas bags for their durability, functionality, and overall cuteness! I’ve used their canvas weekender bag for 3 years. It still looks like new and I always receive compliments on it. I recently upgraded to this matching set (weekender, cosmetic kit, tote) and have loved having matching everything! Is that the southerner in me? I think matching is so cute – whether it be two sisters in the same dress or the same print on all my luggage!
  8. Enjoy coming home to pets. haha This is an odd travel tip, but there’s something about coming home to Nilla that makes leaving even the best resort in the world “a-ok” with me. It’s the cherry on top of every trip and the perfect transition back to “normal life” after a fabulous vacay.

Do you have any travel tips? I’d love to know them! Thanks so much for reading!
